Objectives
At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Recognize common emotional, relational, and behavioral responses to cancer across diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship, and understand how these responses may present in clinical work even when cancer is not the primary presenting concern.
- Describe how crisis and prolonged stress impact coping and nervous system functioning, and use these concepts to inform assessment, pacing, and intervention when working with clients affected by cancer.
- Implement practical strategies for working sensitively and effectively with cancer‑affected clients, including navigating boundaries and the therapeutic frame, addressing relationship and intimacy concerns, and adapting care to clients’ changing needs over time.
Priscilla Andrews, MA, LCPC
Presenter Bio
Priscilla Andrews, MA, LCPC, is the Director of Clinical Services & Programs at the Cancer Wellness Center, where she oversees clinical services and program offerings for individuals, couples and families impacted by cancer. Her clinical work emphasizes nervous system–based and trauma-informed perspectives, drawing from polyvagal theory as well as relational, emotionally focused, and existential therapy approaches. She has worked with adult cancer patients and their loved ones for nearly 20 years, with a focus on individuals, and couples across the cancer trajectory, with particular clinical interest in the newly diagnosed and post-treatment experience. In addition to her clinical work, Priscilla has served as a consultant for Polyvagal Theory and Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy trainings and has supervised master’s-level students and pre-licensure clinicians.
