Objectives
At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will:
- Understand the history and rationale for using play therapy with children
- Learn the goals, objectives, skills, and rationale for using child-centered play therapy
- Utilize child-centered play therapy skills
Dr. Timothy “T.J.” Schoonover, Ph.D., LCPC, NCC, RPT, PEL:SC
Presenter Bio
Dr. Timothy “T.J.” Schoonover, Ph.D., LCPC, NCC, RPT, PEL:SC is a fourth-year assistant professor at Northern Illinois University. His research interests include play therapy, adverse childhood experiences, and creative interventions. His clinical work has focused on working with children ages 3-10 while utilizing play therapy and other developmentally appropriate interventions. Additionally, he has experience as an elementary school counselor, where he supported students with developmentally and culturally appropriate interventions to help them in their academics and social-emotional development. He has received awards from the Association for Play Therapy, the Association for Humanistic Counseling, and the Association for Child and Adolescent Counseling. Dr. Schoonover has a passion for working with children and adolescents with developmentally appropriate therapeutic interventions.
