Northbrook, IL – Josselyn, a leading provider of comprehensive mental health services in the North Shore and Greater Chicago area, has introduced the EMDR Therapy Initiative. EMDR is an evidenced-based treatment designed to help individuals process trauma and emotional distress in a safe, supportive environment.
“EMDR is the gold standard for trauma treatment,” says Josselyn’s Director of Training John Cahill, LCPC. “It was developed originally to support veterans with PTSD and now has much broader application.”
This treatment is provided by trained professionals at Josselyn and helps clients process traumatic memories by using a combination of eye movements and guided instructions.
“It’s a method of processing stuck memories in a way that goes beyond the level of language,” Cahill explains. “We don’t need to talk through the trauma. We can go straight to the emotion and use eye movements, whether it’s by following my hand that’s moving back and forth or with different tools, to shift stuck emotions so that they can be processed now.”
Access to specialized treatments like EMDR can be limited. To combat this, Josselyn is committed to making this therapy more accessible. Josselyn President and CEO Susan Resko shares, “This year we have trained a dozen additional staff in EMDR, bringing the current total to more than 30 clinicians offering this hard-to-find treatment.”
Seed funding for the EMDR Initiative was generously provide by the family of Josselyn board member Janice Mabie MacVicar.
