Objectives

At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will:

  • Gain an understanding of the identities under the neurodivergent umbrella and their intersections
  • Be able to identify the different models of disability and their impact on neurodivergent communities
  • Explore how colonization has impacted the experiences and care that neurodivergent communities receive
  • Learn ways to decenter neurotypical and Western frameworks of care and clinical practice to better support neurodivergent clients

Presenter Bio

Kassie is a queer, neurodivergent art therapist & substance abuse counselor currently providing outpatient services through Creative Alchemy Counseling in Chicago. They have been providing therapeutic services since 2011; supporting individuals who are navigating neurodivergency in a neurotypical world, trauma, grief and loss, substance use concerns, and those in the LGBTQIA+/Queer community. Kassie’s practice is informed by the neurodiversity paradigm, disability justice, trauma-informed care, cultural humility, and a commitment to decolonizing mental health care. In addition to their clinical work, Kassie is an adjunct faculty member at Adler University and provides supervision to emerging art therapists.
