On October 20, Josselyn therapists presented to more than 30 judges and county personnel from the Nineteenth Judicial Circuit Court, which presides over Lake County. Waukegan-based staff therapists Andrew Hamlyn, NCC, and Kim Wolfe, PEL, talked about mental wellness in the context of the Court’s workplace.

“It’s so important to provide education and support for everyone in our community, including our professional helpers,” said Wolfe. “It’s easy to forget that those we rely on for leadership in our community are those who should also receive support and education about their own mental health.”

The presentation touched on a number of aspects of mental health, including the impact of mental health challenges, recognizing signs of distress, and navigating vicarious trauma. Wolfe shared, “it’s essential to acknowledge how leaders and those in the helping profession experience vicarious trauma while serving our community.” Hamlyn and Wolfe also presented strategies for self-care and mental wellbeing.

Hamlyn emphasized the need for raising awareness about mental health care in the workplace, explaining, “Getting the word out about mental health is vital because mental health is universal. It doesn’t have a face, it doesn’t have an ethnicity, race, gender, or sexual identity. Mental health challenges can affect anyone, in any industry or workplace.”

Josselyn is leading the effort to promote mental health awareness in the areas we serve through presentations like this, trainings like Mental Health First Aid, and participation in community events.

“It’s uplifting to see employers take the time to address mental health,” said Chief Clinical Officer Michael Scholl. Prioritizing mental health in the workplace can have a profound impact on employee well-being, reduce the stigma that often surrounds mental health care, and contribute to a culture of understanding.
