Objectives At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize limitations of the DSM diagnostic model in practicing substantive, person-centered psychotherapy
  • Build knowledge base of how to assess for personality in the clinical setting
  • Deepen awareness of transference/countertransference reactions as diagnostic tools to aid in therapy’s change process
  • Appreciate the depth and style of each person’s psychological world as the primary focus for therapeutic intervention
Patrick Dawley, LCSW
Presenter Bio Patrick Dawley received his Master of Social Work degree from Loyola University Chicago and currently holds a full-time private practice in Chicago. He is a candidate for an Advanced Certificate in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy from the Chicago Center for Psychoanalysis. His areas of clinical interest include helping people work through issues of identity, purpose, vocation, and spiritual/religious concerns. Patrick previously worked in community mental health at The Josselyn Center, treating a wide range of mood, anxiety, personality disorder and psychotic distress. In addition to consulting mental health centers and social service agencies in their difficult work treating psychosis, Patrick offers consultation and supervision to help therapists re-attune themselves to the spirit of psychotherapy that is often lost in modern treatment approaches.
Objectives At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand how trauma affects the body and the brain
  • Recognize symptoms as adaptations to the trauma
  • Use affect regulation and pacing to keep clients within their window of tolerance
  • Appreciate the potential of the therapeutic relationship to relieve suffering, and to stimulate new personal and relational growth and healing
